Discovering the Magic of Lake Como and Italy’s Lakes Region

If you’ve ever dreamt of a picturesque getaway, you’re not alone—Lake Como is the kind of place that calls to travelers from around the world. I first experienced its charm last spring and fell head over heels for it. It was so enchanting that we returned in the fall, and by 2019, I had already visited multiple times. Lake Como is truly special, and if you haven’t been yet, let me tell you: every word used to describe it—romantic, breathtaking, serene—is absolutely true. Honestly, it’s the kind of place I could see myself living forever.

Northern Italy, with its stunning landscapes, is one of those regions that exceeds all expectations. The lakes area, including the majestic Lake Como, is where beauty seems to stretch to infinity. As someone who’s been to Lake Garda, I can tell you that the Italian lakes region is like no other.

The Italian Lakes: A Paradise for All

The lakes of Northern Italy—Lake Garda, Como, Maggiore, and Iseo—are some of the most famous in Europe. They’re nestled in the Lombardy region, where the dramatic mountains meet the water, creating an almost dreamlike backdrop. These lakes are massive, and it’s hard to grasp their true size. In fact, at Lake Como, some parts of the lake are so wide that they almost feel like the ocean.

Over time, I’ve visited both Lake Garda and Lake Como several times, and each time I leave, I can’t help but feel the pull to return. The idea of buying a vacation home here? We’ve seriously talked about it.

Choosing the Right Town to Stay In

There’s no shortage of charming towns around Lake Como, and each one offers its own unique flavor. The most popular ones are Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio, and Como. If you’re visiting for the first time, it’s best to stay in one of these main towns because they’re central, well-connected by ferries, and offer plenty of dining, shopping, and sightseeing options.

If I had to rank them, I’d go with Varenna first—it’s absolutely stunning. Como comes next, followed by Bellagio and Menaggio. All four are well-connected and easy to explore by ferry. For those driving, there’s a car ferry service available, though the ferries don’t run too frequently in the evening.

Getting Around the Lake: Ferries, Buses, and Boats

One of the most scenic and efficient ways to get around Lake Como is by ferry. The three main towns—Menaggio, Bellagio, and Varenna—are part of a triangle, and ferries between them are frequent during the day. However, be mindful that ferry schedules are limited (the service ends by 8 pm), and during the busy tourist season, tickets can sell out fast. I recommend booking tickets in advance to secure your spot.

For a more personalized experience, why not rent a boat? You don’t need a license, and renting a boat for a few hours can be a fantastic way to explore the lake. I did this once with a few paninis in tow, and it became one of the highlights of my trip. There are also private boat tours available if you want a more guided experience.

If you’re not in the mood for ferries or boats, the bus system around the lake is also a convenient option, although it’s a bit slower than the ferries.

Best Time to Visit Lake Como

While Lake Como is popular year-round, the best times to visit are during the shoulder seasons—late spring (April to May) and early fall (September). I went in April, and the weather was perfect—mild temperatures in the low 70s with hardly any crowds. The fall is equally beautiful, with warm weather and fewer tourists.

If you’re after the beach, make sure to stay in a town that has one. Not every town around the lake offers a beach, but Bellano, where I stayed during the fall, has a lovely one.

Exploring the Towns Around Lake Como

Varenna: This town has quickly become one of my favorites. Its narrow, winding streets are dotted with cafes and shops, and there’s a certain magic in the air. Varenna is the kind of place where you can enjoy a glass of wine while watching the boats drift by.

Bellagio: Known as the “Pearl of the Lake,” Bellagio is the largest of the main towns. It’s a hilly, pedestrian-friendly town filled with art galleries, restaurants, and breathtaking views. Villa Melzi, perched on a hill above the lake, is a must-see for history and architecture lovers.

Menaggio: Menaggio, where we stayed on our first trip, is a more relaxed town compared to the others. It’s less steep and feels a bit quieter, but still offers plenty of charm with its lakeside walks and friendly vibe. During our visit, we stumbled upon a country line dancing event at a local bar—one of those quirky, unexpected moments that travel often brings.

Como: If you prefer a more lively atmosphere, Como is the place to be. It’s the largest town and has the most modern amenities—plenty of shops, restaurants, and nightlife. It’s also the easiest town to access if you’re coming from Milan (just an hour away by train or car).

Must-See Activities Around Lake Como

  1. Brunate: A short funicular ride from Como takes you up to Brunate, a quaint mountain town with spectacular views of the lake. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can hike up to the top.
  2. Hiking: Lake Como is surrounded by mountains, so it’s a hiker’s paradise. There are trails for all levels, and the views are nothing short of spectacular.
  3. Villa Monastero: Located in Varenna, this villa boasts beautiful botanical gardens and a fascinating museum. It’s the kind of place where you could easily lose track of time while exploring.
  4. Rent a Boat: As I mentioned, renting a boat is an easy and fun way to see the lake. No license is needed, so it’s simple to head out on your own or with a guide.
  5. Visit Orrido di Bellano: This hidden gem is a dramatic gorge just a short walk from the ferry station in Bellano. It’s a natural wonder with waterfalls and a series of walking paths that let you explore the gorge from above.

Final Thoughts

Lake Como is the epitome of Italian charm. From its stunning scenery and historic villas to its relaxed vibe and friendly locals, it’s the perfect place for a getaway. Whether you’re looking to explore the small villages, indulge in local cuisine, or simply relax by the water, Lake Como has something for everyone.

If you haven’t already, I highly recommend adding this region to your travel bucket list. It’s one of those destinations that will stay with you long after you’ve left, making you dream of your next visit.
