Hiking the Malla Strict Nature Reserve Trail in Kilpisjärvi, Lapland, Finland

Nestled in the far northern reaches of Finland, the Malla Strict Nature Reserve offers one of the most scenic and peaceful hiking experiences you can find in Lapland. Located near Kilpisjärvi, this protected wilderness area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore unique landscapes and tranquil surroundings. The trail, part of the larger 800 km Arctic Trail, takes you through pristine nature, offering views of Finland, Norway, and Sweden, all while following a well-marked path that keeps you in touch with nature, but without disturbing it.

Where to Stay Near the Malla Nature Reserve

For our stay, we rented a cozy cottage from Kilpisjärvi Retkeilykeskus, and it was a great choice. The cottage was equipped with everything we needed, including two beds, a kitchenette with a stove, microwave, and coffee maker, as well as a bathroom with hot water. However, keep in mind that linens and towels are not included and must be booked separately. It’s a simple, comfortable place to rest after a day of hiking, and you can easily reserve it through online platforms like Booking.com.

About the Malla Nature Reserve

Malla was officially protected as a nature reserve in 1916 and became a strictly protected area in 1938. The reserve is home to unique flora and fauna, and the landscape is defined by its fells, lakes, and rugged terrain. The area is accessible to visitors via a designated hiking trail during the warmer months, while in winter, cross-country skiing is a popular activity.

The 10 km-long trail from Kilpisjärvi to the Three Nations’ Border Point, where Finland, Norway, and Sweden meet, is an unforgettable adventure. Though you can take a boat from Kilpisjärvi across the lake to shorten your walk, we missed the boat during our visit. The boat operates three times a day and drops you off near the hiking trail. It takes around 30 minutes, but if you prefer to hike from the start, be prepared for a half-day adventure.

The Hike: A Beautiful, Easy Trek

We opted to begin our hike from the parking area near Kilpisjärvi. The first part of the trail was slightly challenging, with a steep incline and loose sand, so sturdy hiking boots are essential. Soon, we crossed a bridge over Siilaskoski, where we enjoyed sweeping views of Sillasjärvi Lake. The trail quickly became easier to navigate, with the path leading us along the gentle hills of Kilpisjärvi.

At the top of the hill, the trail flattens out, and you’ll reach a fork. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can take a detour for about 1 km to hike up to Pikku Malla peak (738 meters). The path to the peak is clearly marked, but we decided to continue along the main trail.

After passing by the serene Mallajärvi Lake, we encountered a small uphill section before the trail became more rocky. This section of the hike requires a bit more caution, but it’s worth it as you approach one of the main attractions of the trail: Kitsiputous (Kitsi Waterfall).

Kitsiputous Waterfall: A Beautiful Stop

As we neared Kitsiputous, the sound of rushing water grew louder. The waterfall consists of three smaller cascades, totaling a height of about 100 meters. The first drop is 29 meters, followed by a 25-meter fall. This waterfall was only properly measured in 2018, using a drone, which speaks to how remote and pristine this area remains.

The view of the waterfall was absolutely stunning, with the surrounding natural beauty providing a perfect backdrop. For those who want to continue, the trail leads towards the Three Nations’ Border Point, a significant landmark where the borders of Finland, Norway, and Sweden converge.

A Beautiful, But Challenging Trail

Unfortunately, my knee issues prevented me from completing the entire hike. The descent became painful for me, and I had to turn back before reaching the border point. For most people without joint issues, this is a relatively easy trail. The first couple of days may be tough on your body if you’re not used to hiking, but it’s well worth the effort.

In conclusion, the Malla Strict Nature Reserve offers an unforgettable experience for anyone looking to explore Finland’s natural beauty. Whether you’re hiking the full 10 km trail or just enjoying a short walk, the stunning views of lakes, mountains, and waterfalls are sure to leave you with lasting memories. If you’re planning a trip to Kilpisjärvi, make sure to put Malla on your list—it’s an adventure you won’t regret!
