Conquering Pico de la Zarza: Hiking to Fuerteventura’s Highest Point

Standing at 807 meters above sea level, Pico de la Zarza is the tallest mountain in Fuerteventura and one of the most rewarding hikes on the island. The trail isn’t particularly difficult, but the payoff at the summit—breathtaking views over the Jandía Peninsula and the vast sweep of Cofete Beach—makes it an absolute must for anyone visiting this part of the Canary Islands.

Why Pico de la Zarza Stands Out

What makes this hike so special is the island’s unique landscape. Fuerteventura is known for its dry, almost lunar terrain, and the contrast between the golden hills, the turquoise Atlantic, and the rugged cliffs is truly unforgettable. From the summit, you can look down on Cofete’s endless shoreline, framed by the dramatic mountains that tumble into the sea. It’s a view that stays with you long after the hike is over.

Location and Trail Information

The peak is located on the Jandía Peninsula, a natural reserve in the south of Fuerteventura, within the municipality of Pájara. Locally, it’s also referred to as Pico de Jandía.

  • Height: 807 m
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate
  • Distance: 6.3 km one way (about 12.6 km round trip)
  • Elevation gain: 686 m
  • Duration: 3.5 to 5 hours

Reaching the Trailhead

The most convenient way to start the hike is by car. The trail begins near the Occidental Jandía Mar hotel and the Jandía Golf Course, where you’ll find a small parking area. If you’re staying in Morro Jable, it’s possible to walk to the start, but keep in mind the trail is already long, so adding extra kilometers may make it more tiring. Guided tours are also available if you prefer company or local knowledge along the way.

Tips Before You Go

Although Fuerteventura is one of the driest Canary Islands, weather can shift quickly in the mountains. Morning or early afternoon is the best time to hike, as clouds often gather around the peaks by evening. Carry plenty of water, sunscreen, and a snack for the summit. The path is generally straightforward, but sandy patches and loose rocks can be slippery, so supportive shoes are recommended.

What to Expect on the Trail

The hike begins with a steeper ascent up the Talahijas hills, offering early views over Morro Jable and the coast. After this first climb, the route becomes gentler, winding through rounded, ochre-colored hills. The final kilometer feels more like a traditional mountain path, zigzagging upwards until you reach a fence and gate near the summit. From there, it’s only a short walk to the top.

Along the way, you might spot goats, lizards, or ravens circling overhead. With luck, you could even see the endangered Canarian Egyptian vulture soaring above the cliffs.

The Summit Experience

Reaching the top is an extraordinary moment. The panorama stretches across the Jandía range and out over the Atlantic, with Cofete Beach stretching for kilometers below. The ocean shifts between deep blues and bright turquoise, crashing into golden sand and forming patterns of white surf. Looking inland, you’ll notice the dry riverbeds that hint at how water occasionally flows through this arid landscape.

The summit often attracts a few opportunistic ravens who linger near hikers, hoping for a snack. Their presence adds to the atmosphere of this wild and remote setting.

Final Thoughts

Pico de la Zarza was easily my favorite experience on Fuerteventura. The hike is manageable for most fitness levels, yet the views from the top rival those of much harder climbs elsewhere. If you’re visiting the island and want to experience its natural beauty at its finest, this trail should be at the very top of your list.
