In today’s episode of the Slices of Time Street Photography podcast, I’m joined by Melik Alperen, a talented street photographer based in London with roots in Istanbul. His unique approach to capturing moments, especially his ability to get close to his subjects while remaining unobtrusive, truly stands out. In this episode, we dive into his journey in photography and how he navigates the world of street photography.
Melik’s Photography Journey
Melik’s love for photography started at a young age, inspired by his father’s passion for capturing moments during family holidays. He grew up surrounded by photography, from his father’s underwater shots to landscape photography. His journey began when his mother gifted him his first camera at the age of 11, and from then on, photography became a constant companion in his life. After years of exploring photography as a hobby, Melik worked as a trainee photojournalist in London for two years and dabbled in model photography. Now, he’s studying graphic design at university, blending his love for visual mediums with his passion for photography.
The Influence of Art and Color
Melik’s approach to photography is deeply influenced by his admiration for art, particularly painting. Growing up without easy access to photography books or social media, he turned to art museums for inspiration. The light, compositions, and the emotional storytelling of paintings guided his own work. It wasn’t until recently that Melik reconnected with photography communities online, including Instagram, after taking a two-year break from social media. This time away helped him develop a unique style without being influenced by others, but now he embraces the idea that it’s okay to be inspired by fellow photographers.
From Black and White to Color
Melik’s photography initially revolved around black and white images, driven by the often cloudy and gray weather in London. Black and white allowed him to focus on emotions and the mood of a scene without the distraction of color. However, in the last two years, Melik transitioned to color photography and was amazed by the emotional depth that colors could bring to his work. He describes color as an endless spectrum, adding layers to his images in ways black and white couldn’t achieve.
Embracing Different Lenses and Perspectives
Melik’s choice of gear has also influenced his approach to photography. He used to work with long lenses, which kept a certain distance between him and his subjects. But after switching to a Fuji X100V with a fixed 23mm lens, he was forced to get closer to people, changing his perspective entirely. The close proximity allowed him to connect with his subjects in a more intimate way, resulting in portraits that convey emotions and stories more powerfully. Now, he prefers using a wide-angle lens that brings him closer to the action, capturing the raw energy of the streets.
Building Connections with Subjects
One of the hallmarks of Melik’s street photography is his ability to interact with people, making them feel comfortable before capturing their image. He believes in the power of conversation, spending time with his subjects to understand their story before taking their photograph. Whether it’s a friendly chat with a man who offers to buy him a beer or engaging with a woman receiving her lost phone from a Charlie Chaplin impersonator, Melik ensures his subjects are not just faces in his photos but people with stories.
The Influence of Travel on Photography
Traveling has had a profound impact on Melik’s photography. Each new destination offers different cultures, landscapes, and people to photograph. For instance, street photography in Turkey offers a stark contrast to London, with its different cultural attitudes toward photography. Melik finds that traveling and interacting with locals enriches his work and pushes him to see the world through a different lens. He shares how his travels to Albania, Greece, and other countries have shaped his photography, and how he immerses himself in the local culture before clicking the shutter.
The Importance of Spontaneity and Luck
Street photography is as much about timing as it is about luck. Melik explains that some days, he might walk for hours without capturing anything significant, but when the right moment comes, it makes all the effort worth it. The unpredictability of street photography keeps him excited and motivated to explore new places, even if it means sometimes walking for hours and ending up with only a handful of shots.
Reflections on Gear and Photography Philosophy
When it comes to gear, Melik embraces the idea that it’s not the camera but the moment that truly matters. He believes that the best camera is the one you have with you, whether it’s a high-end DSLR or an iPhone. In fact, he has an extensive collection of photos taken with his iPhone, proving that the gear doesn’t define the quality of the photo—it’s the photographer’s vision that counts.
Future Travel Plans and Photography Aspirations
Looking ahead, Melik has his sights set on some exciting travel destinations, including Cuba and Mongolia, both of which are on his photography bucket list. He’s drawn to the unique culture and landscapes of these places and hopes to capture their essence through his lens. As someone who has already visited 27 countries, Melik’s goal is to continue exploring the world and expanding his photographic horizons.
Conclusion
Melik’s journey in photography is a testament to the power of exploration, both in terms of gear and culture. His evolution from black and white to color photography, his shift from long lenses to wide-angle lenses, and his deep connection with his subjects showcase a photographer who is constantly growing and adapting. Whether in London, Istanbul, or abroad, Melik’s street photography is driven by a passion for capturing the world’s stories, one photograph at a time.
