With ongoing discussions around border security and immigration enforcement in the United States, many travelers are concerned about the current state of affairs when visiting the country. Stories of extended interrogations, device searches, and even detentions have been circulating, leading some to question whether it’s a good time to travel to the US.

Having our own trip planned to the US, we’ve done some research and gathered insights on how to make your entry as smooth as possible. If you’re considering a trip to the United States soon, here’s what you need to know before you go.

Documentation Is Key

The first thing to consider when traveling to the US is ensuring your documentation is in order. Whether you need a visa or an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), it’s important to have everything lined up before your trip. Most travelers will need a visa, depending on their nationality, and can schedule an appointment at their local US embassy to apply.

For those from countries eligible for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), an ESTA allows you to bypass the need for a visa. However, make sure you’re aware of restrictions, especially if you’ve visited certain countries in the past like Cuba, Iran, or Syria. If you qualify for the ESTA, the process is quick and can be done online.

Another critical point to remember is that your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date from the US. In addition, ensure you have a return flight and confirmed accommodation—immigration officers may request this information during your arrival. Having printed reservations on hand can also help speed up the process if questioned.

Take Advantage of Preclearance

If you’re flying from one of the 15 airports offering US preclearance, you can avoid many of the usual hassles upon arrival. This system allows you to complete customs and security checks before you even board your flight, meaning you can skip the typical TSA and customs lines upon arrival in the US.

While preclearance guarantees faster entry, it doesn’t grant automatic entry. Border agents still have the discretion to stop and question travelers, and in rare cases, individuals can be denied entry despite going through preclearance.

Preclearance is available at airports in Canada, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Aruba, Ireland, and the UAE. If you’re flying from another country, you’ll still need to go through the usual entry procedures, which may involve waiting in lines and answering questions upon arrival.

Be Aware of What’s on Your Devices

Recent reports indicate that US Border Control has been increasingly scrutinizing travelers’ electronic devices, including phones and laptops. While searches of personal devices at borders aren’t new, the frequency and intensity have risen in recent times.

To avoid complications, make sure the information on your devices is minimal and non-controversial. Even if you’re not carrying anything illegal, certain topics or content, especially criticism of the government or sensitive political matters, could raise red flags and delay your entry.

If you’re asked to unlock your devices, you can technically refuse, but this might result in the confiscation of your devices or denial of entry. Our advice is to avoid confrontation and remain calm during questioning, as this can help keep the process as smooth as possible.

Expect Questions About Your Travel History

If you’ve traveled extensively, especially to regions like the Middle East, North Africa, or countries like Cuba and Iran, be prepared for thorough questioning. US border agents may inquire about your past trips, including where you stayed, how long you were there, and the purpose of your travel.

Having a travel history that doesn’t align with what the agents expect could raise suspicions, so be ready to provide clear and honest answers. While it can feel invasive, it’s important to remember that you must comply with their requests.

Know Your Rights (And When to Comply)

When crossing the border as a non-US citizen, your rights are limited. You do have the right to refuse to unlock your devices or answer certain questions, but doing so could result in delays, detainment, or even deportation. The safest route is to comply with the agents’ instructions, remain calm, and avoid becoming defensive or argumentative.

It’s important to understand that while these security measures may feel invasive, they are within the scope of US law, and refusal to cooperate may only escalate the situation.

Final Thoughts

While there’s an increase in border scrutiny, it’s important to remember that most travelers experience smooth entries into the United States. The stories of extensive interrogations and device searches are still relatively rare compared to the number of people arriving in the US daily. However, if you’re traveling frequently or have a non-traditional job, be prepared for the possibility of additional questions or checks at the border.

For now, we’re keeping a close eye on the situation as we prepare for our trip. If you’re planning to visit the US soon, make sure your documentation is in order, know what’s on your devices, and be ready for any questions about your travel history. The key is to stay calm, follow the rules, and expect a smooth process most of the time.
